Hair Styling Tips: 5 Things You Need to Know

Healthy hair is the keyword for 2022, we’re over “keeping the length” or trying to push our hair colour in a direction it doesn’t want to go, in favour of promoting healthy, shiny hair. Here are our top 5 hair styling tips you need to know to get your hair into shape this season.

Brush carefully

On average, we lose 80-100 strands a day - this of course is very general and each person’s hair structure and growth cycle will be completely unique to them. With that in mind, our first hair styling tip is to make sure you’re brushing in the right way that won’t aggravate your scalp and cause further shedding!

Your hair is much more susceptible to damage when it’s wet so be sure to treat it right - using either a detangling spray, or an oil to work through towel-dried hair.

Start by gently loosening the ends of the hair with a paddle brush, wide tooth comb or Tangle Teaser.

Once you’ve loosened off any knotting toward the ends, start working your way up the hair, leaving combing directly from the root until last- trust us, you’ll thank us!!

Use the right tools

Make sure you have the right tools to create the look you want.

When did you last buy hot tools? Is the hairdryer you’re using more than 4 years old? Are you using heat protection before you blow dry?

The secret to healthy hair is in using the best tools, and that doesn’t always mean the most expensive - at all. Your hot tools have a life span and if you’re washing your hair every day and blowdrying it too, it could be time to invest in a new hairdryer.

Did you know that when a hairdryer is past its life expectancy it can exacerbate the look of split ends, cause your hair to be brittle no longer be operating at the correct temperature?

If you’re looking to keep your hair in the best condition, you’ll definitely want to try using a new one to see the difference!

Prepare for events

Do you have a event to get ready for?

Preparing your hair the evening before not only saves you time, it also helps your hair to settle before styling. You can wash and blow-dry your hair the evening before and then loosely plait or twist your hair into a top knot.

Freshly washed hair can be more difficult to style because it’s silky and less pliable, whereas day 2 hair mixed with some texturising hair styling products and your hair artist’s skills and you’ll be good to go!

Never skip the heat protection

If you haven’t already discovered Olaplex, then we’re here to tell you alllllllll about it.

It’s a game-changer and a life-maker.

The difference between hair that has had heat protection used on it and hair that hasn’t, is phenomenal. Now this is nothing new, heat protection has been around forever- but only recently have Olaplex developed both number 6 and number 7, both of which have a certain percentage of the treatment in it- so you’re nourishing your strands while protecting it from heat.

Win win.

The difference between number 6 and number 7 is that the former is a cream blowdrying lotion and number 7 is an oil that’s designed to protect your hair for the temperature of straightening irons and tongs, which tend to be much higher than hairdryers.

Skip the ponytail

We get it — it’s not a wash day, so you just spray some dry shampoo and throw your hair up in a ponytail.

It’s an easy hair style.

Whether you love ponytails or you turn to them regularly out of necessity, you should consider giving your hair a break from them.

Your trusty ponytail can cause a lot of hair breakage, especially when they are high and tight. Not to mention, you might be giving yourself a tension headache!

If you’re committed to your up-do, reduce strain on your tired out strands by replacing your elastic hair ties with a claw clip. This is a gentler way to create the same look.

We hope that these simple hair styling tips keep your hair happy as we move into the new year, whether you are trying new looks or falling back on old favourites.

Don’t forget to pop by your nearest Blushes hair salon to get more great hair care tips. In the meantime, from choosing your products carefully and brushing your hair the right way to giving the ponytail a break, remember that healthy hair is key for the best styling opportunities!
