Tell us something more liberating than chopping off your hair. We’ll wait.

After months of living with lank, lacklustre locks just pleading for a trim, what better way to re-emerge back into the world than with a chic new ‘do. Allow us to introduce the Autumn-Winter seasons’ most sought after trend - The Bob, version 2.0.

While you’ll all be familiar with this timeless classic, some may be apprehensive about taking the plunge - we’re here to show you how empowering it can be to completely reinvent your look with this seasons’ must-have style. At Blushes, we’re obsessed with the new trend and come armed with tonnes of inspiration ready to win you over.

Whether you’re veering toward a super sleek jaw-length bob, a relaxed boho’ French bob or a soft, grow-out-friendly collar length ‘do; with a little personalisation, a bob can be transformative for any facial architecture.

Fear not, if the word ‘bob’ still causes you to inwardly shudder with lingering PTSD that dates back to household scissors, a bowl and your mum’s kitchen circa 1990 then stick with us, we’re here to tell you about The Bob 2.0.

Facial Architecture

The Bob is the most timeless, ageless -and more importantly- the most versatile style of them all. While no two faces are ever the same, small tweaks and personalisation with your cut and styling will have you leaving the salon feeling ready to conquer the world. We’ve broken it down for you into three main facial architectures and how to identify a style that resonates with you.

“When a woman is about to change her hair, she is about to change her life” - Michelle Blake O’Brien

Facial Architecture 1 – Sharp

We have a simple belief system when it comes to face shapes and that’s “if you have lines, you can wear them” be it hair, clothes or makeup. If you have an angular jawline or prominent cheekbones then your facial structure can take strong, blunt cuts.

Think Kim Kardashian circa mid-2019 with the “glass hair” trend, exuding high shine, expensive, healthy-looking locks that perfectly complements her sharp jaw and brings the focus to those gorgeous doe eyes. Falling just below the jawline, Kim’s midi Bob is an eternally flattering and safe length.

For those a little braver check out Rosamund Pike’s image below. Inches shorter than Kim’s, Rosamund sports the mini, delicately tucked behind one ear to accentuate that cut-glass jawline yet still uber-feminine.

Can we just take a moment for Margot Robbie’s lob here?...*sigh*…With those chunky “I’ve just been to the salon” ends hitting just onto the collar, her all one length bob is the best introduction for those who just want to dip a toe in.

Style Notes– Style with L’Oreal Techni Art Fix Design Hairspray after straightening for taming fly-aways and creating flawless, reflective shine.

Colour Me- Opt for striking colours but keep it block and uniform. This style of bob works best when the hair is all one colour for shimmering shine and gloss.

Facial Architecture 2 – Fusion

Fusion facial structures include both lines and curves. Best suited to styles such as the reborn 70s ‘shag’, with emphasis on chunky layering around the forehead and cheeks, to its style sister the Bohemian French Bob. The theme here is the textured shape, shattered layering, minimal styling and a combination of lines and edges.

If ever there was a hairstyle that went hand in hand with Beyonce’s lyric “I woke up like this”, it would be this one! This ‘do is your new best friend to exude laissez-faire chic. See Taylor LaShae below for ultimate inspiration.

We also couldn’t miss an opportunity to feature Emma Thompson’s daring cropped pixie here as our mini, the crop is a sophisticated yet low-maintenance style with its choppy layering.

Style Notes – Using L’Oreal Technical Art Beach Waves spritz into towel-dried hair and apply a little Rebel Push up for added volume, try a diffuser to dry the hair to achieve style like Kaia Gerber or simply allow your hair to dry naturally. The key is not spending too long on styling, the look is effortless chic.

Colour Me - To fully complement the texture and layering throughout the hair we recommend using colour to contour this even further. You heard right, contouring isn’t just for your makeup anymore, it works with colouring your hair too. Opt for French Balayage techniques where the hair is hand-painted to create dimension and depth that makes even the finest of hair look thicker.

Facial Architecture 3 – Soft

With softer facial architectures the most flattering bobs are those that show no perceivable lines. The style is fluid, the emphasis on movement, the baseline is not cut square or too strong, and there are no edges to the shape. The Bob can be worn at different lengths to suit the individual’s face shape. Depending on how your facial proportions sit, we would also recommend balancing out wider set cheekbones with a fuller or softly layered parted fringe. Closing the perimeter around the forehead helps to balance the width in the cheeks and opens up the eyes and brows.

Style Notes– To complement the fluidity of the cut, opt for a deep side parting or a zig-zag parting. Nothing should be too set or formal, this style is best suited to curls or waves. The theme is flirty, sexy, feminine and very soft. Starting with a centre parting, use a large barrel tong to create full curls, spritz with Techni Art’s Ring Light for luminous shine and choose to relax your curls by combing once cool or leave tighter. For added movement and body, leave putting a parting in until last.

Colour Me – Lucky for this facial structure you can pull off just about any colour when choosing colour here the key is to complement your skin tone.

Hair is such an important aspect of how we feel about ourselves and how we project ourselves. If we look good, we feel good- right?
