Blushes Winter Haircare 101

Winter fills us with all kinds of excitement. Coffee orders become spice-scented, our deep berry lipstick is firmly applied and nobody even looks twice at us for wearing sequins to brunch - because it’s festive?!

However, when it comes to our hair, we’re not filled with the same joy. The colder seasons for many reasons are harsher to our hair than summer is and that’s why we’ve compiled our top 5 tips to show you how to look after your hair and help you through winter.

Keep It Cool

“Finish your shower routine with a blast of cold water over your hair.”

We’re no stranger to old wives tales when it comes to hair care tips, but we’re happy to say, this isn’t one - it really works!

You should begin with a warmer temperature when washing your hair in order to open the cuticle and effectively clean the hair and scalp.

Once you have conditioned your hair lower the temperature and thoroughly rinse your hair with cooler water.

Cold water is integral in closing the cuticle of the hair, thus achieving smooth, reflective shine. This is such a simple tip but the benefits are endless.

Improves blood circulation? Check. Controls frizz and flyaways? Check. Hair cleaner for longer? Check. It’s win-win!

If In Doubt, Exfoliate

You may find that the behaviour of your hair will change with different seasons and that your summer cleansing and styling routine is now falling short.

It’s time to strip it back to basics. The cold weather, pollution, and product build-up form a hefty combination for your hair to contend with, it’s no wonder it may be struggling!

Swapping your regular shampoo for an exfoliator is the best way to combat that pesky build-up.

Massaging Kérastase’s Scrub Apraisant through your scalp once a week activates micro-circulation, promotes skin renewal and regulates sebum production.

Masque-moi

With 2020’s mantra of Self Care at the forefront of our minds - and skincare product sales having shot into the stratosphere - why not begin a ‘skincare for your hair’ regime too?

While we aren’t able to see you at the salon (for now!), recreate the salon experience from home with an indulgent masking routine.

Carve out some time to give your hair some TLC, pop a hair towel on the rack to warm, light the candles, set the bath tray up with your favourite Kérastase range and prepare to kick back.

Once you’ve applied your masque to the mids and ends of your hair, securely wrap your pre-heated towel around your head, allow it to penetrate for 10 minutes then rinse.

Supercharge your bedtime routine with the Nutritive Magic 8 hour serum applied to towel-dried hair to finish.

If you’re someone whose hair type dictates the need to see a hot tool every other day then fine (this is a judgement-free zone!) Before you reach for any heat, though, remember to prep your base.

You wouldn’t apply your foundation without using a primer first, so treat your hair with the same love.

With towel-dried hair, grab your tube of Kérastase Resistance Ciment Thermique. Taking a 20-50p sized amount, divide sections and laminate the product through the mid-lengths to the ends until evenly distributed.

Consisting of essential amino acids, Resistance Thermique creates a protective topcoat built to withstand temperatures of up to 200’c. However, GHD’s advice is to keep heat at the sweet spot of 185 degrees as a maximum.

Take The Strain

If we’re being realistic, we know that by the end of the day, everybody wants to throw their hair up to get it out of their way.

While we wholeheartedly support this decision, make sure that while your hair is out of sight and out of mind that it’s still being cared for.

Wearing your hair up can put strain on the hair follicles around the front hairline, where strands are most delicate.

Upgrade your plain brown elastic to an anti-static silk scrunchie from Slip; or, for our curly-haired girls, check out Anthropologie’s range of spiral hair toggles for minimal strain on the scalp and beautiful colours.

Upgrade your brown elastic hair bands with an anti-static silk scrunchie from Slip, or Anthropologie’s spiral hair toggles.

Doing all or a mix of these things at home will make your hair more manageable and keep looking and feeling great through the colder months.

The doors to our hair salons in Worcester, Cheltenham, Cirencester and Nailsworth will be open again soon, so if you need any advice on the type of products to use on your hair to keep it healthy this winter, just pop in and we will be more than happy to help.

We’re also super excited to say that our online diary is now open for December. Book your appointment using the links below.
