A Taste of Spring with The Oxford Wine Company

We’re kicking off the Guest Artist Series in Oxford and first to welcome us to the Jericho community is The Oxford Wine Company - who happen to be neighbours of ours on Little Clarendon Street.

The Oxford Wine company are not your usual independent wine store. Not only are they purveyors of the finest wines from all across the globe, their passion also lies with educating others in what it means to be a master of wine with their bespoke wine school and tasting classes.

Part of the OWC group, including their very own wine bar on Little Clarendon Street, are a further two shops on Turl Street and Botley Road. OWC also has a partnership with Sandy’s Piano Bar, a super chic cocktail spot with regular live music acts to boot.

Looking ahead to the start of early spring when we’re finally able to enjoy al fresco dining again, Becka the Marketing Manager from The Oxford Wine Co gives us her suggestions for the perfect spring tipples.

“As we’re rolling toward the start of spring, the lighter evenings and warmer temperatures always make me think about G&Ts. For spring sipping, I like The Oxford Artisan Distillery's Physic Gin, made with 25 botanicals sourced from Oxford's own Botanic Gardens. It's just the ticket, especially to enjoy in the garden as they’re starting to come into bloom. Perfect to enjoy with a light tonic, with less sugar, to allow the rich, earthy and unique flavour profile in the gin come through.”

“If you're looking for fizz, the Crémants de Loire using the traditional method of sparkling wine in France is a great substitute for Champagne. My suggestion is Château de Montgueret Tête de Cuvée Saumur. It's made in the same way as Champagne, but in the Loire Valley and using the grape Chenin Blanc. With expressive apple notes and a lively fizz, this wine lends itself to being an aperitif, but you can also pair it with food - I enjoy it with scallops.”

“My go-to white wine is the Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough. The fruit is grown in the Wairau Valley in New Zealand, which means the wine is a bit more tropical and a bit richer than other Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs you might try. It's a classic: delicious, aromatic and a lovely treat for spring evenings!”

“Spring is the time for lighter reds. I first tried the Etna Rosso from Tenuta delle Terre Nere a couple of weeks ago, and I cannot stop raving about it. The profile is lithe, concentrated and elegant. Definitely worth a try. However, if you're still feeling that winter chill and want something a little crunchier, how about La Miranda de Secastilla? Produced organically from ancient bush vines, this is a unique and outstanding wine, with complex, earthy notes. The spicy Garnacha fruit balances the tannins to provide a long and powerful finish. Best paired with grilled meats.”

“If any of these recommendations have whet your appetite, or you'd like to know more, visit us at any of our shops. Our friendly and knowledgeable team can't wait to help you find something delicious to put in your glass this spring.”
