6 TIPS ON GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR HAIR THIS SPRING

Lyndon Davies, Advanced Director and Manager of Blushes in Tetbury, talks advice on finer hair, styling tips & what to ask your hairdresser for to get the best out of your hair this Spring. Lyndon knows just the right questions to ask to fully interpret his clients’ desires for their hair using the principles of Blushes Hair ID methodology. His work is a combination of techniques learnt from some of the most technical and classic educators from Saks and Vidal Sassoon, with a modern and contemporary twist that he's developed through his past 9 years of experience with Blushes.

Lyndon’s philosophy: “Honesty is the best policy. Tread carefully during the consultation period to be as in-depth as you need to be, while being fully honest about what will suit that individual client. Finer hair is my favourite challenge, finding ways to enhance the look so that it’s wearable and manageable for every day styling - it really begins and ends with a great haircut.”

If your hair is on the finer side, then you know that it can be particularly challenging to bring life to - but with Lyndon’s top tips to guide you, you’ll feel more confident about your hair than ever.

Going Shorter

The natural inclination with fine hair is to take the length shorter, so if you’re open to it - you’ll want to know what to ask for. Starting with inspiration pictures is the best place to start, find an assortment of imagery that depicts hair density similar to yours and take it to your next appointment. Your stylist will be able to walk you through each image, asking the right questions to be able to create a look that’s personal to you. Think Helen Mirren, Emma Thompson or Zoe Kravitz for something a little edgier.

Creating Weight

A strong haircut is the foundation to being able to style it well yourself, and really that’s the only thing that matters - we’re not interested in giving you a look that looks fabulous when you leave the salon freshly blow dried, but is then impossible to recreate yourself.

The key is to build the weight in the correct place, depending on where your hair needs it, it’s a balancing act between emphasising weight in some areas and in others, creating a lightness that will allow you to defy gravity when blowdrying!

Short Additions

A sharp, precise Bob is a timeless cut. However, while you’ll want to ask for chunky blunt ends - without any layering or texturizing, you're going to struggle with movement and lift. What you’ll want to ask for (if your stylist doesn’t already suggest it!) is “invisible” or “soft” layers, something that will elevate the look without taking away from the strength of the baseline. Another great tip is introducing a full set of bangs or a fringe. By creating a stronger focal point around the face, the added feature point increases the strength at the front, completely changing the overall look of your hair, giving you the desired lift with soft bangs or maximum strength with a full fringe.

Lower Maintenance Options

If a fringe or bangs sounds too much like hard work, then we have other ideas to help give you the height and fullness that you so desire! A nice and easy one that doesn’t  require the intervention of scissors, is simply changing your parting by flipping your hair over, to give you the desired height. To achieve this, you’ll want to get a healthy amount of product into the hair (we’ll tell you about our recommendations below!) and blowdry without any perceivable parting to ensure maximum lift is achieved.

PRODUCTS.. Your new best friend

Meet the best friends you’ll never get sick of… Kérastase Densifique range. We cannot stress enough how impactful these products are on hair that needs more “oompf”. Your go-to for styling with this range is the Densimorphose mousse -contrary to popular opinion - mousse is the most incredible tool for fine hair, this one in particular is super lightweight but really packs a punch when it comes to giving tremendous lift. The range uses Hyaluronic acid and Intra-cylane which hydrates and plumps the hair. A little tip from Lyndon “Apply the mousse throughout towel-dried hair, using around a conker-sized amount, then grab a small comb and thoroughly brush through from root to tip to fully disperse the product through all areas of the hair.”

Styling & Blow Drying for maximum effect

When it comes to blow drying and styling, we’d encourage anyone with hair on the finer side to blow dry their hair in an upwards fashion, the key is to direct airflow away from the direction it grows for height and longevity, therefore lifting underneath the roots and up. Once dry, always turn your dryer to the cold setting, this will help set the hair and maintain your hard work!
