Winter hair care tips from our Cheltenham stylists

There might only be 5 weeks left of winter but it’s never too late to start thinking about how you can protect your hair from the elements and keep it healthy whatever the seasons throw at you. So, we’re sharing some top winter hair care tips from our Cheltenham team.

Chances are Christmas has got you all stocked up on moisturisers, body butter, and bath oils, but, it’s not just your skin that can get dry and appear dull during the cold wintery days. Your hair can dry out too, become unmanageable and appear dull and lifeless.

Below are four things you can be doing right now to get your hair in great shape and keep it looking and feeling healthy all year…

Protect your colour

You may need to ‘up your game’ in winter when it comes to keeping your hair colour looking bright and vibrant, as extreme temperature switches and using heated styling tools can leave it looking dull.

One way to keep your colour bright and glossy for as long as possible is to avoid washing your hair too often.

Sounds counterproductive right, but only washing your hair when absolutely necessary will allow your hair's natural oils to work their magic and prevent colour from washing out and fading.

When you do wash your hair, go for a shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair to help maintain vibrancy and shine. And throwing in a nourishing mask to your routine is also a great way to add moisture and softness.

If you need to use heated styling tools, then make sure you protect your hair with a leave-in heat protector. Resistance Ciment Thermique Heat Protector from Kerastase would be our go to, as it repairs and protects at the same time. Double win!

Keep hair hydrated

You may find your hair becomes brittle and easily broken during the winter months, making it difficult to style.

Fortunately, our Cheltenham Stylists have some fantastic hydration boosting products up their sleeves. Our favorite is Nutritive 8H Magic Nourishing Overnight Serum, pop it on before you go to bed and it will instantly nourish your hair while you sleep so you wake up to smooth, silky locks with no need to rinse out.

Good hydration can start from the inside too. Drinking plenty of water on a daily basis has so many health benefits, and one of them is improving the strength of your hair. So, drinking two liters of water a day is a really good habit to get into.

If you’re not sure what your hair needs, you can ask one of our hair stylists at Blushes Hairdressers Cheltenham for advice on how to add more moisture to your hair without making it greasy and lank.

Boost scalp health

The key to healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp, so pay attention to the skin under your hair, especially this time of year when your skin is prone to drying out.

Your scalp plays a vital role in supporting the growth of strong and healthy hair, so it’s well worth giving it some attention this time of year.

Here are 6 simple scalp care habits worth getting into this new year:

  • Wash your hair when it starts to feel oily.

  • Use a shampoo that matches your hair and skin type.

  • Make sure to wash out all your shampoo and conditioner thoroughly.

  • Remove product buildup with a scalp scrub once or twice a week (depending on how much product you use on a daily basis)

  • Protect your scalp when you come into contact with Chlorine.

  • If you start to develop an itchy, burning, or flaky scalp, talk to your healthcare provider or dermatologist.

We recommend massaging your scalp with Kerastase Scrub Apaisant once every couple of weeks, especially if you use a lot of hair styling and finishing products. This is a soothing scrub and cleansing treatment that will get rid of any product buildup and combat dryness, dandruff and flakiness.

Fight the frizz

It’s far more effective to prepare your hair for frizz before it actually kicks in, and damaged hair is more prone to frizz. So good hair hydration, regular trims and the right shampoos (everything we’ve talked about so far) will help keep frizz at bay.

Using oils or anti-frizz products like Kérastase Discipline Fluidissime Anti-Frizz Spray on wet hair before styling will help to reduce the chances of a frizz frenzy when you step outside.

Another frizz-fighting tactic is to swap your cotton pillow for a silk one. Silk pillows prevent friction, giving you smoother sleeker hair when you wake up - and they help to lock in moisture too. Combine that with the Nutritive 8H Magic Nourishing Overnight Serum and you’re on to a winner.

Visit your favorite salon

Don’t forget to keep on top of your trims and the Blushes team is here for you if you need any professional advice from a top local hairdresser.

We could all do with a little pamper to combat the winter blues, and there’s nothing better than a relaxing visit to a Blushes hair salon, and coming out with hair that lifts your spirits.

If you book an appointment with a Cheltenham stylist, they will help you to get your hair healthy and looking amazing, for a much-needed pre-Spring boost.
