Top Tips From Our Hairdressers in Solihull

With the colder weather fast approaching, our hair is going to need a little bit more love than usual. Just like your skin, all hair types need protection from the winter elements if it’s going to stay soft and healthy. So, we’re sharing some top tips from our hairdressers in our Solihull town centre salon.

It’s not just the cold weather that can hurt your hair during the winter months either. Having the central heating on, sitting around a fire and taking warmer showers will all steal moisture from your hair.

Making some small changes to your hair care routine now, before the cold really sets in, will really help to prepare and protect your hair for the months ahead.

And our Solihull hairdressers are here to help. The specialist team of hairdressers in Solihull town centre have shared their Winter hair care tips so you can protect your hair from the harsh elements and keep it strong, glossy and well nourished all season.

Top Tips from the Talent

Clare - Tips for caring for thinning or fine hair

The key to keeping your fine hair happy in the winter is to make sure it’s hydrated. Fine hair tends to get frizzy in the winter, so using a more lightweight styling cream or serum can help reduce the static charge.

Another thing to look out for is a dry scalp. Your skin will also be affected and can get a bit dry, causing some irritation or even dandruff, which is not ideal. A moisturising hair mask or oil treatment would be a good idea and the occasional head massage is really great for soothing the scalp and stimulating your hair follicles to encourage growth.

Derri - Looking after coloured hair

Your hair changes in the winter because the humidity levels drop with the temperature, causing coloured hair to fade and look dull and flat. But, the good news is there are a few things you can do to protect your coloured hair so it stays bright and glossy for longer. One thing to do is check you’re using colour protective shampoos and conditioners. These will help to keep your hair hydrated and prolong the colour.

Another thing you can do is space out your hair washes so your hair is able to hold on to its natural oils for as long as possible. You’ll also give it a little break from the heat of showering and styling which will be much appreciated.

A great way to add more moisture to your hair and keep your colour looking good is to add essential oils to your hair care routine. A go-to for me is the Nutritive 8H Magic Nourishing Overnight Serum from Kerastase for soft smooth hair when you wake up.

Tori - Protecting your hair from the harsh temperature changes

When you’re heading out, a big no-no is going outside with wet hair. And I’m not just saying that because your head will get cold. The cold air actually expands the hair shafts making them weak and more prone to breakage, so make sure your hair is thoroughly dry before going out.

If you’re using hot styling tools, like a hairdryer or tongs, you’ll need to protect your hair from the heat too. Our hair does not like extremes so we need to help it out. Heat-protecting serums are definitely worth investing in to make sure your hair doesn’t dry out and lose its lustre.

Having regular trims will also help to keep your hair healthy and manageable so it looks its best whether you wear it up or down.

Ellen - How to maintain volume

It’s not just dryness you have to battle in the winter, the cold weather can deflate volume and leave your hair lifeless too.

While blow dries and curling will give your hair volume and texture, that isn’t always an everyday option. You can try moving your parting around to give your hair more lift or even ask your stylist to add layers to take some of the weight out of your hair giving it more movement.

Another great way to give the illusion of volume is to have a few highlights around your parting. It will make your root area look fuller and give your hair a visual lift.
